There are just some songs that you can’t help to dance to. This is one of them. In fact, it probably has one of the most recognisable openings of any disco track out there. I’m talking of course about YMCA by the Village People.
For those of you who don’t know, The Village People are probably the first “manufactured” boy band ever, and were the creation of Jacque Morali, a French composer. Initially, the band was just a group of dancers but then they got so big, it was felt they needed to be an actual group. So the ad went out: “Macho Types Wanted: Must Dance And Have A Moustache“. Yup. That actually happened…and then this happened…
This track is so famous it even appears in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. There’s a location called the Malibu Club which features a group dancing onstage, parodying the Village People, using the in-game firefighter, police officer, soldier, biker and construction worker. Anyway, more than 30 years down the line, they’re still playing this track. Let’s see Justin Bieber pull that one off.
